Elevator Door Safety

At Executive Elevator Company our main priority is excellent customer service. Part of providing that service is making sure that we take every measure to ensure the safety of you and your loved ones.

We offer two types of safety precautions to use between your swing door and your elevator gate, that will prevent the swing door closing with anything between it and the elevator gate.

These measures are not required by national elevator code at this time, although we feel they should be.

A door baffle for each swing door is included in the base cost of your elevator (as shown below).

Your second option is to use an infrared light screen mounted to the top of your cab to monitor the space between the car gate and the swing door. If the sensor detects anything between the gate and the door, a signal is sent to the controller to shut the car down preventing any movement.

Home Elevator 3″ x 5″ Rule

Executive Elevator Company installs code compliant elevators per the ASME ANSI A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators Part 5.3 Private Residence Elevators. Rule 5.3.1.4.2 (aka 3″ x 5″ Rule) of the above-referenced code states: Clearance Between Hoistway.Door(s) of Gate(s) and Landing Sills(s) and Car Door(s) or Gate(s). The clearance between the hoistway doors or gates and the hoistway edge of the landing sill shall not exceed 3 inches (76 mm). The distance between the hoistway face of the landing door or gate and the car door or gate shall not exceed 5 inches (127 mm).

Note: Concrete block/masonry shafts and some commercial metal door frames can often create 3” x 5” violations.

The 3″ x 5″ Rule is a national code requirement to help prevent safety issues. Executive Elevator Company takes pride in ensuring safety in the use of their equipment and as a policy wants to make sure all Builders, Developers, Owners/Users are aware of and adhere to the National Code.
